road trip

I just returned from a three-day road trip with three good friends.  We were all in need of a brief get-away from the day-to-day, and New Orleans was our destination . . . streetcars and jazz music; beignets and cafe au lait; architecture and history; seafood and sugar; Lake “Punch-a-train” and the mighty Mississippi . . . we crammed all the fun and food we could possibly fit into our short visit.

Thanks ladies!  I savored each minute and every morsel . . .

promise

I accompanied my daughter and her friend to the park today for a short run (them, not me).  While they made their way around the trails, I took a few pictures.  The first thing I noticed were these sad little signs blocking the entrance to the beach.

As I continued my exploration around the park on this drab gray day, I came across these surprising blooms.

So even though the sun was hidden, and the weather was gloomy, newness was sprouting in all its finery.  In spite of the darkness, life finds a way . . .

winter lights

Last year around Christmas time, an eatery-tavern in town displayed the most beautiful stained glass and beaded creations.  As the light changed throughout the day, the pictures took on varied looks.  In full sunlight, the colors were bright and clear; on cloudier days, they were more subtle and subdued.  My favorite was at night, when the strung lights were shining and the glass took on a special starry twinkly quality.  Light always breaks through and shows the true colors . . .

how beautiful

Feet are for travelling . . . for dancing and leaping . . . for standing and running . . . and often they just need to be propped up for a bit . . .

They get dusty dirty tired . . . they get water refreshed and cooled . . .

And we keep on walking . . .

black and white

At first glance, black and white photos might seem dull and lacking in personality; but look closer and you will see the details, the shadows, and the sharper lines.  Lack of color does not mean absence of definition; it only means that we are required to delve a little deeper for the beauty.

all aboard

Several years ago, my train-loving friend took me and another friend along for an adventure on the Texas State Railroad.   Taking a timeout from the fast-paced world, it was nice to slow down and savor the beauty of the east Texas countryside.  I also appreciated the unique design of the train itself.  Here’s to your love of trains, my friend . . .

early flight

Waiting on an early morning flight this past week that would take me to visit my brother and his family,  I was stunned by the view from the terminal window.  Sigh . . .

leaves

Over the past several days I have been noticing the unusually vivid colors of the leaves around here.  I’m not sure what is the cause of such intense color, but I am sure that you will enjoy these fall leaves as much as I.  Seasons come and go and each has its own beauty . . .

in color

Brilliant shades of aqua and green.  Vibrant reds, yellows, and oranges.  Sharp blacks, crisp whites, subtle browns . . . All unique, individual – yet part of one whole color spectrum.

pruning

Today my muscles are quite sore, my face is slightly sunburned, and I am very satisfied.  After months of tending to the “gardens” of others, I found that I had woefully neglected my own.  But with the help of two of my many stand-by-me friends, the old is new again.  Much thanks goes to Lora for her labor-love, and to Sonja for the clean fresh pine straw (thanks to Jeff too).  If only I had taken a “before” picture . . .
