fractal-ology

I first encountered the word “fractal” in an amazing book entitled The Shack.  The term refers to the order and regularity found in what appears to be chaotic randomness.  The principal of fractal-ness (yes, I made up that word) holds true in nature as well as in our personal lives.  Giving a mere passing glance to the present mess, we see only the mess;  but, if we will stop long enough to look close enough, we will see the artful arrangement of something quite beautiful.

okra

A friend gave me a wonderful gift today, a bag of garden-picked okra.  If you don’t know what okra is, it looks like this.

In the South, okra is prepared in a variety of ways such as boiled with tomatoes (too slimy for my tastes); added to gumbo and soups (again, too slimy); and my favorite, fried!  My mom makes the best fried okra, but I thought I would give it a shot.  Of course, since I have been a little Cajun-ized, I had to spice up the cornmeal a bit with some Tony’s.  If you don’t know what Tony’s is, that is a whole other subject . . .

Before cooking up this crispy batch, I had been talking with my friend in NH and she was pining for some okra.  So I put aside a portion for her (which I promptly ate).  I know that’s what she would have wanted – right, Candace?

Thanks to my friend, Mary, for sharing from her garden.

So yummy!

doors

A favorite subject of many photographers is doors.  The play of shadow and color, the unique hardware, and the surrounding support structures are often interesting and beautiful.  Perhaps these many different doors also remind us of our comings and goings, and speak of opportunities for change . . . or maybe they simply represent the people we love waiting behind them.

light show

Not long ago, my daughter and I went out at night to shoot some light.  We went to the downtown area of this small city to see what photographic shapes and colors we could create.  One interesting thing about these shots is that no two could ever be alike . . .

shades of gray

When we think of gray (or grey for the more European among us), we probably don’t consider it much of a color.  But the variations of gray combined with shadows and light often yield surprising patterns and beauty.  Although vivid reds, cool blues, and vibrant greens seem to catch our attention more readily, I never want to overlook the hidden grace in shades of gray.

up the coast, to the mountains

Continuing our NH adventure, my friends and I drove to Hampton Beach today, dipped our toes into the cold Atlantic, then proceeded  northward along the coast.  We made our way to Nubble Lighthouse, stopped to admire the Saco and Pemigewasset Rivers, and ended our excursion with a beautiful view of the sunset in the White Mountains.

on the water

Today, my friends took me to Lake Sunapee (NH) and we were able to observe several wood boats in the harbor.  The polished mahogany decks were sleek and beautiful, and the leather seats added a touch of class and elegance to each one . . .

angel of st. patrick

I’m hanging with some friends in New Hampshire this week.  They have this interesting little cemetery adjoining their property so we sauntered over for a look.  I was fascinated by this magnificent family marker.  The sun was setting behind the trees . . . I wanted to capture some of the detail and get some good light at the same time . . .
